Alumni Spotlight

Alumni Spotlight – Kedwin G.

This month, we caught up with Kedwin G., an Ambassador Teacher alumnus and native of Honduras. Kedwin taught in two North Carolina counties, Alamance-Burlington County and Warren County, during his seven-year stint teaching in the U.S. Kedwin filled us in on what he’s been up to since returning home in 2022 and reflected on a few of his fondest memories from his time in the program. Read on to meet or reconnect with Kedwin!

Reflecting on his experience teaching in the U.S.

Q: What schools did you teach at and when?
A: I taught in the U.S. for seven years, from 2015-22, first at Marvin B. Smith Elementary in Alamance-Burlington County and then I finished out at Northside Elementary in Warren County.

Q: What inspired you to apply to teach in the U.S.?
A: Teaching in the U.S. seemed like a great new opportunity to grow professionally and personally. I also wanted to learn new skills, help students grow academically, and learn to adapt to a culture different from my own.

Q: What did you enjoy most about your time teaching in the U.S.?
A: The support from the Participate Learning staff, the weather, and the environments at both schools.

What life looks like now

Q: Where are you now? Are you living in your home country or elsewhere in the world right now?
A: After completing the program last year, I returned to my home country, Honduras. I am now living in a town called San Pedro Sula.

Q: Are you still working in education or have you changed career paths? Please tell us about your current job!
A: Yes, I’m still working in education—I currently teach 4th grade.

Q: Do you have any other life updates that you would like to share with us and the Participate Learning Network?
A: Outside of work, I have been taking a residential electricity course, creating and posting videos on my YouTube channel, and taking care of my two cats.

Share 3-5 facts about your time teaching in the U.S. Think about favorite memories, travel experiences, special moments, accomplishments, or other things that happened during your time with the program.

  • My students excelled in their statewide exams for two years in a row in Language Arts and Math, first in the 2015-16 school year and second in the 2016-17 school year.
  • I had the opportunity to serve as a local adviser for teachers from Chile and Honduras.
  • During one of my winter breaks, I took a trip to Washington, D.C. where I visited the Lincoln Memorial and a few museums.
  • I took a fun summer trip to Virginia Beach one year!
