Celebrating Girl Power on International Day of the Girl

Today marks International Day of the Girl, an annual recognition of the critical role girls play in our communities and the ongoing need to create pathways for their empowerment and support worldwide. This year’s theme, “Digital Generation. Our Generation,” highlights challenges that have become more visible during the pandemic.

While many have transitioned to remote learning and working, over 2.2 billion people under the age of 25 lack internet access at home, leaving them disconnected from opportunities to continue learning safely. Among these young people, girls face even greater barriers, with the gap in internet access widening from 11 percent to 17 percent over the past decade.

At Participate Learning, we are proud to help students grow into compassionate leaders in our increasingly interconnected world. We believe that all young people should have access to opportunities that expand their horizons and allow them to connect with different and various perspectives. On this International Day of the Girl, here are three ways you can support the strengthening and celebration of girls in your community and beyond.

1. Understand the Challenges

To address the barriers facing girls worldwide, it’s important to begin with an understanding of the facts. For example:

  • Among youth aged fifteen to nineteen, nearly one in four girls are not employed, educated, or in training, compared to one in ten boys.
  • In 2021, 435 million women and girls lived on less than $1.90 a day.

These numbers reflect deeply rooted challenges that affect girls around the world. Take time to educate yourself using a variety of resources and engage in conversations with others about these issues. Reflecting and learning together can inspire meaningful action.

2. Highlight Stories of Leaders and Changemakers

While the statistics reveal significant challenges, there are many girls overcoming obstacles to drive positive change. International Day of the Girl is also a time to celebrate their accomplishments and amplify their voices.

Share stories of inspirational figures like Malala Yousafzai, who advocates for education. Her work highlights the values and priorities of a generation determined to create a better world. By sharing these narratives, you can showcase the impact of individual voices and inspire others to make a difference.

3. Uplift Girls in Your Community

While global figures like Malala are inspiring, impactful change also happens locally. Take time to learn about the efforts of girls in your community who are working toward a brighter future. Find ways to support their initiatives, whether by donating time or resources, sharing their stories, or amplifying their work within your networks.

If you’re an educator, consider ways to celebrate and strengthen the girls in your classroom. This blog post offers tips for recognizing and amplifying their voices through meaningful classroom activities. Girls have the right to pursue their dreams in safe, supportive environments that nurture their potential. By supporting them today, you help strengthen the leaders of tomorrow.
