Areas of Instruction
Primary education
Guide a group of students for the entire school day. Elementary (primary) school in the USA is kindergarten through fifth grade (ages 5-11).
You will teach all core subjects, including math, science, social studies, and language arts. All subjects are taught in English.
Dual language (bilingual primary)
Similarly to elementary school teachers, dual language teachers also lead classes in all core subjects. However, teachers in dual language programs teach in Spanish or Mandarin with one of two models:
- Full immersion: 90% in Spanish or Mandarin
- 50/50: split between English and Spanish/Mandarin
World languages
(Spanish, French, and Mandarin)
In world language classrooms, native speakers of Spanish, French, and Mandarin provide authentic language instruction. These language teachers will have different groups of students with varying levels of proficiency.
Some elementary schools may offer world language classes each year, but most often world language classes are offered for older children.
English as a second language (ESL)
This program helps newcomers to the USA improve their English. It enables them to achieve academic success and become confident problem-solvers with a strong sense of belonging and connection to the world.
As an ESL teacher, you will have students of all ages with varying degrees of fluency in English. This position requires teachers with a higher level of English proficiency. Qualified applicants usually teach English in their home countries.
